Historic Cedar Shake Roof with Added Ventilation

The Nyani Lodge building, now called Scoops Ice Cream, at the Brookfield Zoo was originally constructed in 1971 as the South Primate Food Center. ICA was retained in 2011 to design the roof replacement project as the original cedar shake roof had failed.  During the design investigation phase it was determined that there was potential for significant deterioration of the wood structural deck. Further complicating the process, were Cook County Building and Zoning requirements. Through an intensive construction review and code research process we developed an innovative solution that met Cook County’s needs and met Brookfield Zoo’s requirements while reducing the project cost significantly. The end result was a new roof system that matched the original in nearly every way with improved insulation and ventilation performance.
